A Couple of Trek Bikes FAQ's

Is my Trek bike made in the USA?
We continue to produce many of our bicycles in the US with a focus on our higher-end OCLV carbon fiber offerings. All of our bikes are designed and engineered at our headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin though select road, ATB, comfort, hybrid, urban and kids’ bikes are produced by Trek-specific overseas vendors. Bicycles produced overseas follow the same stringent quality standards as our domestically built bikes. No matter where your bike is produced quality is stock on every Trek built.

What are the differences between all the materials you use in your frames?
Trek bikes offers three different grades of OCLV carbon, TCT carbon and three levels of aluminum for our frames.

1. OCLV Carbon
Each of our three OCLV carbons are designed to give riders the right balance of performance and value. All of these OCLV frames are hand-made in the USA.

OCLV Red, formerly OCLV 55, is Trek’s premium carbon fiber and uses a significant percentage of high modulus carbon fiber arranged according to our most complex lay-up schedules. Examples include our 6 series Madones, Top Fuel SSL and Elite 9.9.

OCLV Black, formerly OCLV 110, is Trek’s high-performance carbon fiber and employs intermediate modulus carbon and our Tour-proven lay-up schedule. Examples of OCLV Black include the Madone 5.5 and 5.2 and the Top Fuel 9.8.

OCLV White, formerly OCLV 120, is Trek’s workhorse carbon fiber and uses predominantly standard modulus carbon for great performance. An example is the Madone 5.1.

2. TCT Carbon
Trek Bikes Carbon Technology is Trek’s value-orientated performance carbon fiber. These frames are made in Asia under direct supervision of US Trek engineers. Examples include Madone 4.7, 7.9FX and Elite 9.8.

3. Aluminum
Alpha Red, formerly ZR9000, is Trek’s premium aluminum alloy. Alpha Red is ZR9000 or 7000 series aluminum that has been hydroformed or mechanically formed into sophisticated shapes with optimized butting profiles for maximum strength and minimum weight. Many Alpha frames are smooth welded for aesthetics.

Alpha Black, formerly Alpha SLR, is Trek’s high-performance aluminum alloy. Alpha Black is 6000 series aluminum that has been hydroformed or mechanically formed to optimize tube shape.

Alpha White, formerly Alpha SL is Trek’s high-quality and reliable aluminum. Alpha White uses straight gauge 6000 series aluminum with little or no forming.
